Speight's 5 Malt Old Dark was introduced into the Speight's range in 1992 to meet demands for a classic 'dark' beer - a creamy, rich and chocolatey beer that's perfect to match with strong food flavours.
Speight's was born in 1876 when James Speight, Charles Greenslade and William Dawson established their own brewery in Dunedin's Rattray St. Speight's 5 Malt Old Dark was first launched in 1992 and is now part of a range of crafted batch brewed beers from the Speight's family. In recent years Speight's 5 Malt Old Dark has claimed two consecutive silver medals at the Australian International Beer Awards in 2009 and 2010.
5 separate malts have been selected, roasted and matched to create a dark beer that gives rich, creamy, chocolate fudge flavours followed by coffee overtones. The addition of hops balance this chocolate and coffee sweetness with a parting dose of sharpness to ensure a well balanced dark-style beer.
Old Dark is a big malty brew and like other dark beers is robust enough to take on strong food flavours like red meats in rich sauces and gravy. It matches equally well with the strong taste of blue cheese, the bitter sweetness of dark chocolate or the rich complexity of hearty stews and wild game.
